Sadly, Internet addiction is a phenomenon that has become very much
prevalent in the 90¹s. This is due to the fact that it wasn¹t until
recently that technological improvements regarding the worldwide wed
have been made. Internet addiction also affects lots of individuals who
are in post secondary institutions because most tasks are handled
electronically. Researchers suggest that you need to be aware of certain
symptoms in order to recognize them if they are occurring. Some of these
symptoms include: no limitations, lying, harmful results, improper
behaviour, misplaced priorities, rapture, despair, fixation, escapism,
and excessive spending. The consequences of this type of addiction are
that it takes a toll on your sleeping patterns are they are distorted
and highly altered, as well as some other physical ailments that are
caused by an excessive use of the computer. Internet addiction plays a
big role in family problems as relationships often suffer or are
severed, because these individuals place higher priority on cyberspace
than actual interaction with real people. Internet addicts are also
similar to alcoholics, as they will go to great lengths in order to
conceal their problems.

I find that the I after comming to university, I have a developed a
greater addiction for the internet, mostly using chat services such as
msn and icq messenger. Because I am constantly in my residence room, my
computer is always there as well. I find that I have very little self
control in terms on setting time limits of how long is use these chat
services for. This especially happens at night time where as at home, I
would be forced off the computer by my parents because it was late or
that because someone else need to use the computer. Here at school, I
have the computer all to myself, no limitations on how long I stay
online for, and no one to tell me to get off. I find it most difficult
when studying because my computer is always infront of me. I have
attempted to reduce this addiction by either moving to another study
area or closing my laptop when studying to avoid further distractions.

I agree...internet addiction is definetly a problem in this day and age
because of the growing use of advenced technology as a primary form of
comunication...I am unsure though, as to whether it is particularly
dominant in pot-secondary school students...I would tend to think that
it was more seen in highschool students...I think that students going to
a post-secondary institution know what it means to work hard, and tend
not to get as hooked on things like the internet, rather they spend most
of their non-school time doing things such as drinking and partying.
For highschool students though, it is more difficult to do thinngs such
as drinking, and so internet addiction is something that is easily
accessible them. Granted, internet addiction is something that can be a
problem for anyone, I think that it is an incorrect assumption to say
that post-secondary students are affected by it the most.
